Since the 19th century Corfu has produced many important figures in the field of fine arts. Housed in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, the Municipal Art Gallery began operation in 1978. The gallery became a recognised public institution in 1991 in an effort to make it’s, mainly donated, works more widely known. Besides the permanent and temporary exhibitions, lectures, art history courses, educational programs and concerts are also organised there.
Most of the works in the gallery are by 19th century local artists. Amongst the most important being the Samartzis Collection, 42 works, Aglaia Pappa Collection, 23 works, Phillip Makotsi Collection, 12 works, and while two more works were donated by Nikolas Ventouras.
